Tips for Parenting Twins
Women's Health - pregnancy tips and adivice

If you're a parent of twins, or expecting twins, then you doubt know that you've been blessed times two! However, parenting twins can sometimes be a struggle. You've got two children, of the exact same age. There are ways to make things run smoothly, however, as outlined below:

  • Ask for help! This is one of the most important things you can do, especially when your twins are newborns. You'll be getting up in the middle of the night with two babies -- preparing two bottles or breastfeeding twice. You'll be dealing with twice the amount of diapers that a parent of just one would be. You'll need all the assistance you can get, and if family and friends offer it, accept! There's no reason why a trusted person can't care for your twins while you take a nap or a long, hot bath!

  • If your twins are exactly identical, make sure you give them a distinguishing characteristic when they're babies. A flustered parent can easily mix up their twins, especially in the middle of the night! Try different colored clothing to easily identify who's who.

  • Make use of schedules and charts. By creating easy to follow charts that track feedings and diaper changes, you can keep track of which baby needs what and when. It's easy to lose track of feedings and diaper changes, especially with more than one baby. When it comes to giving your twins medication, charts are an absolute must! The use of scheduling and record keeping can make your life a lot easier!

  • As your twins get older, let them develop their own individual identity. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they are the same. When your twins are old enough, allow them to choose their own clothing and toys. Don't just buy them the same thing -- this can cause no end of problems. Your twins will become frustrated and find any way they can to assert their individuality.

  • Get a stroller designed for twins. Using the improper stroller for your little ones can be unsafe and a real pain. Whether you choose a tandem design or a side-by-side model is a matter of personal preference. Choose a stroller that you're comfortable navigating, which will make your life a lot easier when you're on the go!

  • Keep your sense of humor! Parenting twins can be an amazing experience, fraught with happiness and tears, joy and frustration. If you're able to laugh at the mishaps, you can turn a messy parenting situation into a funny family story. Staying positive, even when you're exhausted and frazzled, is key!

Another good idea is to read as many books about parenting twins that you can get your hands on. The more informed you are, the better prepared you are to deal with all the challenges of parenting your double blessing!
